في يوم محدد من كل عام يجتمع الآلاف من أهالي مدينة جينيه في مالي لتغطية المسجد الكبير فيها بالطين، حسب تقرير أليكس دوفال سميث ونادية زيفيني.
يرجع تاريخ هذا المسجد في مدينة جينيه في مالي الى القرن الثالث عشر الميلادي، وقد تهدم كثير من هيكل المسجد القديم واعيد بناؤه في القرن العشرين، ويعد الهيكل الحالي أكبر مبنى طيني في العالم. ويستخدم السكان سلالم خشبية للوصول إلى قمة المبنى لتغطيته بالطين.
ويستخدم السكان هذه السلالم المصنوعة من الأخشاب والحبال للوصول الى المناطق العالية في المبنى لمعالجة التشققات فيها. وتتأكل طبقة الطين بفعل المطر وتظهر الشقوق بسبب التغيرات في درجة الحرارة والرطوبة.
على الرغم من مشاركة الآلاف في هذا العمل وتزاحمهم في العمل، لا تحدث إصابات بالغة بين المشاركين فيه.
تتنافس الفرق المختلفة للانتهاء من عملها أولا. يقول أبولاي ساهامبو (15 عاما): “لا توجد هناك جائزة، لكن شرف المشاركة يستمر طوال العام، ومن يشارك يحظى بالاحترام”.
يمرر المراهقون سلال الطين إلى عمال البناء الذين يطلون الجدران بالطين.
ويقوم الأطفال الأصغر سنا بنقل الطين من قاع النهر، ويعدد عامل البناء ليمبو بوكوم أسماء المواد الغذائية المفضلة لديهم، مشيرا إلى أنهم يعملون على نحو أفضل إذا حصلوا على وجبة جيدة.
يعد هذا اليوم، الوحيد في العام الذي يمكن للأطفال أن يلعبوا بالطين كما يحلوا لهم دون شكوى من أمهاتهم.
لاحظ عامل البناء بوبكر كورومانسي أن عددا كبيرا من السكان يحضرون أعلام مالي هذا العام، وهو ما يعد إشارة، من وجهة نظره، على أن السكان يريدون أن يظهروا ارتباطهم ببلدهم وقت العنف.
بحلول الساعة الثامنة مساء تكون درجة الحرارة أكثر من 30 درجة مئوية، لذا يجف الطين الذي وضع على واجهة المسجد جافا تقريبا في حوالي الساعة الخامسة.
